Aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas: A Family Travel Advisor’s Firsthand Look

By Kelly Catena, Family-Focused Travel Advisor at Magic Family Getaways

On recent Sunday this month, I had the opportunity to tour Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas at Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, before she heads to her winter home in Florida. As a travel advisor who specializes in family and multigenerational vacations, I love experiences like this because they allow me to offer my clients something more valuable than photos and brochures: firsthand knowledge.

From touring staterooms and exploring the ship’s distinctive neighborhoods to discovering entertainment, dining, and activities for every age, I got a closer look at what makes Oasis of the Seas such an exciting choice for a family cruise.

A Ship With Something for Everyone

When Oasis of the Seas debuted in 2009, she helped transform the cruise experience with her innovative neighborhood concept. Areas such as Central Park, the Boardwalk, and the Royal Promenade give the ship distinct personalities, making it easier to explore and find your favorite places.

Despite accommodating thousands of guests, the ship offers a surprising variety of spaces and experiences without feeling as overwhelming as you might expect.

Whether you are planning a family vacation, a multigenerational getaway, a couples’ escape, a honeymoon, an anniversary celebration, a corporate gathering, or a solo adventure, Oasis of the Seas has plenty to offer.

Dining, Entertainment, and Adventures for Every Age

Food lovers will find options for every mood and appetite. Complimentary favorites include Sorrento’s Pizza and the Windjammer buffet, while specialty restaurants such as Hooked Seafood and Portside BBQ offer additional ways to make mealtime part of the vacation experience.

Adults can unwind at the Vitality Spa, work out at the fitness center, relax in the Solarium, or enjoy the ship’s bars and lounges. One standout is the Rising Tide Bar, which slowly travels between decks for a unique cocktail experience. There is also Casino Royale for those looking to try their luck.

Entertainment is another highlight. Guests can enjoy Broadway-style productions such as Cats, spectacular AquaTheater performances, and ice-skating shows. Game shows and activities throughout the day provide even more opportunities to have fun together.

For families traveling with children, the choices are just as exciting. Adventure Ocean gives younger cruisers opportunities to participate in activities and make new friends, while teens have their own dedicated space. The Ultimate Abyss dry slide, FlowRider surf simulator, escape room, laser tag, arcade, basketball court, pools, waterslides, and hot tubs add plenty of action to the itinerary.

My biggest takeaway?

You do not have to choose between a vacation the kids will love and one the adults can enjoy, too.

Oasis of the Seas makes it possible to spend time together while still giving everyone room to pursue their own interests.

Did You Know You Can Get Married on a Cruise Ship?

Royal Caribbean also offers wedding options for couples dreaming of a celebration at sea. Depending on the arrangements available, couples may be able to marry onboard while sailing or celebrate at the departure port.

For couples who want friends and family to witness their special day without requiring everyone to cruise, a port-based wedding may be worth exploring. Eligible non-sailing guests may be able to attend the ceremony through arrangements coordinated in advance with the cruise line.

If a wedding at sea sounds appealing, I can work with Royal Caribbean’s wedding team to explore the available venues, packages, and options that fit your vision, guest list, and budget.

My Tips for Cruising From Cape Liberty

For travelers in New Jersey and the surrounding tri-state area, one of the biggest advantages of sailing from Cape Liberty is the convenience of driving to the port instead of flying.

Here are a few tips I recommend keeping in mind:
  • Download the Royal Caribbean app.
  • Once booked, start exploring excursions and onboard options. Prices can fluctuate, so check availability and pricing as you plan.
  • Look into purchasing extras before sailing.
  • Drink packages, specialty dining, and photo packages may be offered at different prices before and during your cruise.
  • Plan your arrival carefully.
  • Port traffic can be heavy, so follow your assigned arrival time and allow extra time for parking, luggage drop-off, and check-in. Check current port parking rates before departure.
  • Keep essentials in your carry-on.
  • Pack medications, travel documents, swimwear, and anything else you might need before your stateroom is ready.
  • Complete the e-muster requirements promptly.
  • Follow the app's instructions and visit your assigned muster station as directed.
  • Know when staterooms will be ready.
  • Access is generally available later in the day, so be prepared to enjoy the ship before unpacking.
  • Consider travel insurance.
  • Coverage can help protect your trip against certain unexpected disruptions, depending on the policy you choose.

And if you forget your luggage tags, ask the port staff for assistance. They can help direct you through the luggage drop-off process.

My Pro Tip: Choose the Ship, Not Just the Itinerary

When planning a cruise, it is easy to focus on the destinations. Of course, ports of call matter, but I always encourage my clients to consider the ship itself just as carefully.

Weather and other circumstances beyond the cruise line's control can force itinerary changes, sometimes with little notice. For example, a recent sailing scheduled to visit the Bahamas was redirected to Canada after a developing nor'easter affected the original route.

That is why I believe it is important to choose a ship you will enjoy even if your plans change. A great ship can make sea days memorable, too.
